Introduction

Greetings! Welcome to “Olympia: History and Commentary of the Olympic Games, Ancient and Modern.”

Why a blog about the Olympics?
I’ve been interested in and captivated by the Olympic Games from a young age and would like to share that passion with others. Additionally, with the recent announcement by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to support Boston as the US bid city for the 2024 Summer Games, I believe now is a relevant time to create a resource for people who wish to learn more about the Olympics.

Goals of this blog:

  • To share and spread knowledge about the Olympic Games, both ancient and modern
  • To provide insight into the extensive, and at times complex, system of organizations that make up the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Movement
  • To explain the bidding process for the Olympic Games
  • To review and summarize past Olympic Games and Opening Ceremonies of the modern era
  • To highlight athletic accomplishments and compelling stories throughout Olympic history
  • To make available resources for those who wish to further educate themselves about the Olympics
  • To be an impartial commentator, to the best of my abilities

My Process
I intend to build up this blog over the next few months, adding links and resources as I can and writing weekly posts. I’m a believer in the idea that the best place to start is the beginning, so my first few posts will aim to provide a survey of the Ancient Olympics without boring you with lengthy historical essays. I do, however, plan to occasionally post longer writings when a topic warrants deeper analysis.

In Conclusion
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you come along for the ride.
